Restoring a Land Rover Series typically costs between 3,500 EUR and 7,000 EUR for an economical restoration of a roadworthy vehicle with a sound chassis, between 9,000 EUR and 18,000 EUR for a standard quality rebuild, and between 20,000 EUR and 35,000 EUR, sometimes more on a galvanised chassis body-off project, for a concours level build. These 2026 ranges cover parts and labour combined, excluding the purchase of the vehicle itself. Unlike most classics, the aluminium Birmabright body panels do not rust, so almost the entire budget swing between economical and concours comes down to the condition of the steel box section chassis underneath.

Chassis and electrolytic corrosion: the item that decides everything

The Series chassis is a welded steel box section that traps water and mud inside, invisibly, while the aluminium bodywork above it can look presentable. Corrosion is checked with a hammer test for a dull, thinned sound, and more reliably by drilling 8 mm inspection holes at the low points, under the front and rear crossmembers and the rear spring hangers.

Chassis repair or replacement

  • Economical: localised patch welding on a chassis with sound crossmembers, surface treatment. 500 EUR to 1,200 EUR.
  • Standard: replacement of the front crossmember and rear spring hangers, full body-off inspection. 1,800 EUR to 3,800 EUR.
  • Concours: full replacement with a new galvanised chassis, complete body-off rebuild. 3,500 EUR to 6,500 EUR for the chassis alone, parts and fitting.

Electrolytic corrosion prevention

  • Economical: isolating the most exposed aluminium to steel contact points with mastic. 150 EUR to 350 EUR.
  • Standard: systematic Mylar isolation strips and stainless fasteners at every body mounting point. 400 EUR to 800 EUR.
  • Concours: full disassembly, di-electric treatment of every contact surface, cadmium plated fasteners throughout. 900 EUR to 1,600 EUR.

Tip: the bulkhead is the one large steel panel in direct contact with the aluminium body, particularly under the windscreen and at the door hinge posts. It is the single most critical corrosion point on the whole vehicle and deserves inspection before any other item.

Engine and transmission: match parts to the exact generation

Four petrol engine families and two diesel engines were fitted across forty years of production, with different torque values, valve clearances and oil capacities. Identify the engine from the chassis number plate on the bulkhead before ordering internal parts, since bore sizes and head threads are not always interchangeable between families.

Engine service

  • Economical (2.25 litre petrol or diesel): gaskets, timing chain, carburettor or injector service, oil change. 350 EUR to 800 EUR.
  • Standard: full rebuild including reground head, rings, water pump, clutch. 1,800 EUR to 3,500 EUR.
  • Concours: engine removed and stripped to the block, correctly dated ancillaries, engine bay refinished. 4,000 EUR to 7,000 EUR.

Gearbox, transfer box and swivel housings

  • Main gearbox rebuild (non synchro or fully synchro on Series III): 500 EUR to 1,100 EUR.
  • Transfer box service and seal replacement: 300 EUR to 700 EUR.
  • Swivel housing overhaul with new seals and EP90 oil, both sides: 250 EUR to 550 EUR.

Aluminium bodywork and interior

Birmabright panels bolt on rather than weld, which makes disassembly easy but also means every fastener is a potential electrolytic corrosion point once removed and refitted without proper isolation.

Body panels

  • Economical: straightening dents with a rubber mallet, treating surface oxidation, single stage paint. 600 EUR to 1,300 EUR.
  • Standard: replacement of corroded panels, proper aluminium etch primer, two coat paint. 2,000 EUR to 4,000 EUR.
  • Concours: full panel replacement where needed, correct hardtop or canvas tilt, period correct paint finish. 4,500 EUR to 8,000 EUR.

Seats, trim and seals

  • Reproduction seat covers, front and rear bench: 250 EUR to 500 EUR.
  • Full door and window seal kit: 120 EUR to 250 EUR.
  • Canvas tilt replacement: 300 EUR to 600 EUR.

Suspension, steering and brakes

The leaf spring suspension is simple and robust but sags with age, especially at the rear on vehicles used for towing or load carrying, and the drum brakes suffer quietly from corroded wheel cylinders after years of fording and wet weather use.

Suspension and steering

  • Rear leaf spring set replacement: 250 EUR to 550 EUR.
  • Steering box overhaul and track rod ends: 200 EUR to 450 EUR.
  • Swivel pin bearing kit: 100 EUR to 220 EUR.

Brakes

  • Wheel cylinders and master cylinder replacement, all round: 200 EUR to 450 EUR.
  • Brake shoes and drums: 150 EUR to 350 EUR.
  • Fluid renewal with hygroscopic-resistant DOT 4: 20 EUR.

The 3 items where beginners blow their budget

1. Patching the chassis instead of treating the inside of the box section

Welding a repair plate over a visibly thinned area without treating the inside of the box section only hides the corrosion for a season or two. Absolute rule: drill inspection holes at the low points before deciding between a patch repair and a full chassis replacement, and treat the inside cavity with wax injection whichever option is chosen.

2. Skipping electrolytic isolation when refitting the body

Bolting the aluminium panels straight back onto bare steel without Mylar strips or di-electric mastic restarts the corrosion within months, undoing the chassis work already paid for. Isolating every contact point during reassembly costs a few hundred euros in materials and saves thousands in repeat repairs.

3. Mixing engine parts between generations

The 2.25 litre petrol and diesel engines changed bore sizes and cylinder head threads more than once between 1958 and 1985. Ordering pistons or a head gasket from a generic Series catalogue without checking the chassis number plate can mean returning parts that never should have been ordered in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a full chassis replacement cost on a Series?

A new galvanised chassis, parts and fitting included, runs 3,500 EUR to 6,500 EUR in 2026, depending on whether the axles, springs and steering components are transferred as is or overhauled at the same time. A galvanised chassis is worth the extra cost over a painted steel one since it removes the corrosion risk for decades.

Can you restore a Series yourself to cut costs?

Yes, more than on most classics. The mechanicals were designed from the outset to be serviced in the field with basic tools, and the bolt-on aluminium body comes apart without any welding. Chassis fabrication and galvanising still need a specialist. Expect to save 40 to 50 percent of the total budget in labour if you handle the mechanical and body work yourself.

How long does a typical Series restoration take?

Between 6 months and 18 months depending on the level targeted and chassis availability. An economical restoration with a sound original chassis can be finished in a few months of weekend work. A full body-off rebuild with a new galvanised chassis often takes 12 to 18 months once lead times on the chassis itself are factored in.

Are Land Rover Series parts still available in 2026?

Yes, the Series benefits from one of the best supported parts catalogues of any classic 4x4, including new galvanised chassis, bulkheads and full body panel sets. Common mechanical parts are inexpensive and widely stocked, though correct period trim and early Series I specific parts are getting harder to source.

Is restoring a Series a good financial investment?

Values have risen steadily since 2020 as demand for usable classic 4x4s has grown, particularly for Series IIA and III models that can still be driven daily. A well documented body-off restoration with a galvanised chassis holds its value better than a quick cosmetic refresh, though few Series projects are undertaken purely as a financial investment rather than for the vehicle's utility and character.
